Talking about her day

You can ask Sierra...

What did you do at Chinese class?
Sang songs, played music
What songs?
Liangzhi laohu, meimei baozhe
Can you sing liangzhi laohu?
Liangzhi laohu, liangzhi laohu... (sings the whole song)

What did you do at Gymboree today?
Went on the slide, went in the tunnel, sang songs...

What did you do today?
Played with bears, read books

SHE's happy birthday daddy!

SHE likes the Gates building

We couldn't get her away from this chalk sign. She kept studying the letters and talking about them. Finally, Josh picked her up and we dashed off singing some songs to distract her!

SHE went up the hill to fetch a pail of water

Sierra had such a great time climbing these 3 little hills in the new engineering quad at Stanford. I said "ai yo wei ah" as we worked hard to climb these hills again and again. These were big hills to little ra ra's legs! She also enjoyed a few bits of sandwich for the first time. Thumbs up to Ike's sandwiches (real chicken meat, not deli meat). We ate lunch on top of a hill. A student walked by and asked where we got those sandwiches so I pointed her in the right direction. Sierra immediately asked me what auntie said (In Chinese auntie is woman and my mom translates it to English as auntie). Everytime we talked about stanford and how much fun we had climbing the hills afterwards, she mentioned the auntie. Funny what kinds of things she remembers!

SHE made this sculpture

She proudly called me into the room to look when she was done with this.

Added 10/3/2011:
Last weekend, Sierra built two more castles. She told me she was building a castle and pointed out the tunnel through it. (There was indeed a hole for the tunnel, similar to the window above the green "2" block in the bottom center of this structure.)

SHE plays with her Little People

Sierra loves playing with her little people and house and pointing out how they use the dryer, the parts of the bathroom, and more.  Listen closely to her! (This is not the best video of this, but Josh happened to be here this time with his iphone video camera - it works well for videotaping bc Sierra doesn't realize she is being taped since Josh is always on his iphone anyway!)

Rough few weeks

I have not posted in awhile bc it has been rough here.

1) Josh lost his job and spent the last month on a job search.
2) We are looking for a new nanny now that Josh has a new job.
3) Josh isn't being the house husband we hoped for (constantly goes out, and when he is here, he is on his iphone) so we probably should have kept the nanny longer. My mom has had to fill in...
4) But Monday, gran gran hurt her back.
5) So I had to fill in and take care of her most of this week while I have a patent deadline.
6) Lemma passed away.
7) Sierra got a cold.
8) Josh got sicker than Sierra.
9) Sierra got a cough. It's her first cough. Thanks, daddy.
10) Sierra has had several accidents that involve blood:
a) fell on her elbows and knees on the way to Lemma's memorial lunch
b) fell on her left cheek and scraped the back of the couch (fabric burn/scrape)
c) I smashed her 2 smallest fingers on her left hand in the shutters - she still tells me not to wash that hand (even though the skin has closed, the fingers are still bruised under the nail)
d) tripped over Josh and scraped her right cheek

Hopefully everyone will be better soon!

I am now filling in some details on some of the earlier posts.

SHE's a little lady

Sierra is such a little lady. She always crosses her legs at the ankles when seated, as I've noted before. The other thing that I should have posted by now is that she always chews with her mouth closed. It's so funny.

She didn't get this from her mommy or daddy, that's for sure.

SHE's storytime

Note the lady-like crossed legs. Also note that she is looking at the camera. You just can't get a picture of her without her noticing!

SHE's copying the funny card

Sierra loves copying this card that has a comic of a guy with party hats on his head, ears, and nose. :)

SHE found Xiao Tuzi

In anticipation of her chinese music class coming up, Gran borrowed 2 chinese song picture books/CDs. Sierra immediately asked for one of her favorite chinese songs, "xiao tuzi guai guai" (good little bunny, about a bunny that won't let a wolf inside his house). Gran read through the song list and it wasn't in either books. Sierra insisted on looking for it. The next 1/2 hour we were all sitting in the living room talking about other stuff while Sierra kept muttering under her breath "xiao tuzi guai guai" and searching through not just the song books but also her other books. Finally, she found it! There was a page in the book with a picture of a small lamb (looks like a bunny) inside its little house and a wolf outside. (It was a lamb version of the song.) Sierra knew what the song was about, and made the connection with the picture in this brand new song book! She was very excited and we were all amazed!

iPhone Yifu

We just bought Sierra a new special case for her iPhone -- the Fisher Price Apptivity case: http://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Price-Laugh-Learn-Apptivity-Case/dp/B004UU9W78/

When we took it out of the box, she kept saying "I want the new toy" and "What is that?".  When she looked at it for a few minutes with the fake iPhone in the product, she decided she knew what it was and said "iPhone Yifu" (Yifu means clothes in Chinese).  So she basically deduced that this was clothing for the iPhone.  Crazy!!

New Shirt

[post from daddy]

So today when Gran-Gran walks in after being gone since Saturday morning, she was wearing a shirt that she hadn't worn around Sierra for at least a year. Sierra looked up and said "New Shirt"

SHE's enjoying the bike grandma got her for mommy's birthday!

SHE's at mommy's 37th birthday celebration dinner

SHE is singing Happy Birthday to mommy!

SHE's driving all over Nijiya

Josh and gran took her to Nijiya today where she insisted on driving the hello kitty car (and both - they had 2 colors). She threw the biggest tantrum gran had ever seen when they tried to leave!

Clumsy

Although Sierra is mentally very advanced for her age, her motor skills are more normal - of course neither Josh nor I are exactly the embodiments of athletic by any stretch, so this is no surprise!

Liling had previously commented (and gran and I observed, while Josh is reluctant to admit) that Sierra is an impatient and not careful walker. This means she is constantly tripping. This in contrast to Liling's previous boy who was really careful about walking around. Other kids her age all seem to be either more athletic, more careful, or both. Which means you have to be extra careful monitoring Sierra walking around.

She gets the impatience and lack of carefulness from Josh. She gets the klutziness from both sides!

To be fair, Sierra did walk on the early side for a girl (girls usually walk later), but probably bc she is impatient!

Added 9/5/2011:
I just realized that part of why she is extra clumsy these days is she learned to jump recently (~1 month ago) and she is jumping all the time.

Other side. Not this side. Other side

Poor Sierra had 3 injuries this week:
1) Tripped and lightly scraped her elbows and knees in downtown Los Altos on the way to Lemma's memorial lunch at a Chinese dim sum restaurant. (Sunday)
2) Tripped and scraped and bruised her face on the back of the couch (including a fabric burn on the scrape) (Monday)
3) She was playing with her fingers in the shutters and I closed them on her smallest 2 fingers (scrape and bruise) (today, Thursday) Ironically, I was trying to close the louvers so she wouldn't fall on the sharp edges, but in doing so, it bent the shutters' hinges. It all happened so fast, so I didn't even think it was me, which it might not have been, though it must have been. We taped up the hinges so you can't bend them anymore.
:(

She has been such a good and smart girl about not touching her "owies" though. She knows not to sleep on her left cheek. Last night, we put her in bed and she was about to lay on her left cheek and then said to herself "Other side. Not this side. Other side." and lay on her right side. All night long she stayed on her right side every night.

After she hurt her (two fingers on her) hand today, she did not use it to touch anything on her own. Tonight when I handed her her sippy cup, she was about to drink it with both hands like she normally does with one hand on each side. Then she stopped and said to herself, "No not this one. Not this one." And proceeded to drink with just her right hand! I felt bad and held it for her on the other side.

she has 2 little Hello Kitty bandaids on these fingers now. Josh pointed out it's the first time she's worn bandaids (other than when she gets shots).

Heal quickly, little girl!
