Not as much a blog as an online baby book for jotting down notes, milestones, and documenting all the wonderful stories of Sierra before we forget them! - for her to enjoy when she grows up and for us to look back on the memories in the future. Note that this blog is not publicly searchable, so please do not share the link. I may end up password protecting it at some point.

Josh's virus and Sierra's first cold
Josh came home on Friday 9/17 saying he felt like he was coming down with something. Sure enough he was sniffling starting Sat. Gran and I did night duty with Sierra Fri and Sat night. Sat night Sierra started sneezing and being congested and kept waking up at night. Monday Winnie noticed a low grade fever (99.3). Monday Mudder got it too. I am currently trying to fight it off.
Sitting on her own
Gran noticed Sierra going from lying down to sitting up on her own on 9/17. She's been doing it off and on ever since. It's a big milestone since previously we always had to put herself in a sit position. Now she can push herself up with her arms.

Mustard Greens
Today I came back from my lunch meeting and Sierra was sitting/standing in gran's arms at the kitchen table biting and chewing on (american) mustard greens (leftover from last night since josh wasn't feeling like eating after having some bad hot cocoa that afternoon). Mudder commented that she was not scrunching up her nose like she does when she eats bananas, which she thinks are too sweet. Mudder thinks she doesn't have a sweet tooth.
I would never have thought a baby this young would be ok with bitter greens like that, or I would have tried earlier! She had just eaten spinach no problem yesterday for the first time. Josh and I love bitter greens. And I ate a lot of bitter greens while preggers since they were one of the few foods that didn't make me feel nauseated.
It kind of reminds me of how when mudder was preggers with me she craved onion rings (specifically from A&W in Westlake shopping center in daly city). Then when I was young, she had me next to a bag of groceries in the car. Green onions were sticking out and I was chewing on them - raw!

Wa wa (socks in chinese)
Months ago, Winnie pointed out that sierra knows the words "wa wa", which means socks in chinese. so when you put on and take off or show her socks, she says "wa" or "wa wa". Mudder pointed that out more recently as well.
Smooching Naya (or at least a picture of her!)
A couple weeks ago, gran gran was showing her the naya photo book and she reached for this one page with a big closeup of naya and gave her a big wet kiss (this is how sierra kisses - soft and wet and sweet). Then I was reading it with her later and everytime, on that page, she'd plant a big kiss on naya. Sierra loves Naya.
Sierra has really taken to the cats lately. Everytime they walk by she waves wildly and/or claps her hands (she loves clapping these days when she's happy). In the morning, Naya will lie on the boxsprings by the window and allow me to hold Sierra in front of her while Sierra strokes and scratches under her ears and by her chin, which Naya enjoys. Sierra is so happy and squeaks with excitement when she pets Naya. (I won't let her pet Lemma since he is too unpredictable.)

"The only thing she likes is books"
"The only thing she likes is books"
-Gran gran after observing her with some new toys
It's true - sierra is BOOKWORM. She sits with her books in her new booster chair and reads (looks at pictures) while we eat. She sits in her playpen reading books. She sits in the living room reading books on the floor.
She really likes this paper back book "sunrise, sunset" with the lyrics to the fiddler on the roof song. (the boy looks like Josh, I think, so maybe that has something to do with it? :)) She often picks out this book and starts leafing through it.
She likes touch and feel books too - she reaches for and scratches the fake fur in these books. It's very cute.
She loves the cat book with little tabs to make the cats do things (you know she likes it bc some of the tabs are already detached), so I got her the dog version. The dog shaking his head made her laugh.
We have wondered on and off if this is normal baby interest in books, but grandma linda says robbie's not interested in books at all and most babies just want to chew on books.
We need to get sierra a library card. :)

First sign - milk
Today gran gran said come look! And there was sierra signing "milk" for the first time. We haven't been very good about signing milk (pretty much the only sign we've bothered with out of forgetfulness and laziness) so I was wondering if we would just not end up doing the signing thing with sierra. I've even wondered at times if we would even notice if she did do it since the sign for milk isn't that obvious and even though she may be trying to do it, we wouldn't even notice, and she'd give up before we even realized (yes, lame parents we are). But there she was doing it today with one hand, and then midbreast, simultaneously with both hands. :) It was just before her 1st naptime (around 11:45), so it was the right timing too!
The animals have something to say...
Sierra has a leapfrog spin alphabet zoo toy. You spin the wheel and it sings "the animals have something to say... they hoot and holler and chirp away". I got it for her about 2 months ago. Around the 2nd day she had it, she was sitting in her playpen with it and I sang "the animals have something to say..." and she spun it. Then would forget about it. Then I'd sing again "the animals have something to say..." and she'd look up from whatever she was doing (typically a book) and then spin it. The other day gran gran noticed her doing this (even to gran gran's singing the words/tune slightly wrong) and I said "oh yeah she has done that pretty much since she first got it". So I realized I should blog about it.

Guanyin watching over Sierra
Mudder said last week that she feels like Guanyin the chinese goddess was watching over Sierra when she fell. Winnie had given my mom a Guanyin figurine right before the fall and my mom had placed it on the hutch, which happens to be located downstairs just under the bathroom where she fell off the counter. Thank you, Guanyin for watching over our girl!

Labor day weekend and first sunburn :(
For labor day weekend, Josh decided to take off Thurs and Fri and we had a stay-cation. This is much easier than trying to go anywhere these days given that Sierra sleeps on a mattress on the floor surrounded by bedrails on 2 sides and the wall on 2 sides.
Trying to find a sleeping situation that I am comfortable with, safety wise, for Sierra has been an ordeal. There is simply nothing as safe as a crib, and it's hard to try to mimic this. She's been on a king sized mattress on the floor in the corner so that 2 sides have wall and 2 sides of bedrails. The corner is closed off by her bassinet (which she never slept in... finally a use for it!) My latest idea to buy a 3" natural latex mattress topper from this store in SF failed - it smelled so strongly of rubber that I wasn't sure this was a good idea. Even though rubber is natural, it doesn't mean it's safe to be smelling rubber every sleeping hour. Of course, she has lots of natural rubber chew toys and even rubber pacifiers previously, so who knows. Anyway, I had Josh return it. The idea behind the mattress topper is it is low so that when you build a baby pen around it, she can't get trapped between the mattress and the pen. Anyway, the latest is she is on our queen sized memory foam Ikea mattress, flipped over so the memory foam is at the bottom. It is already off-gassed since it's a few years old. It has bedrails on 2 sides, but she is starting to pull up on them (and last night we got video of her actually pulling herself up and standing proudly). I did tons of research and found these gates that are extendable to any length. Well josh tried to install them last weekend and they don't quite fit. One set goes almost all the way along the 2 sides (the other 2 sides are against the wall), leaving a small gap. The small gap is too small to fit another panel from the other set I bought. Sigh. Back to square one. Now we're thinking of hiring a home safety service to see if they can do custom gates.
Anyway, I digress... last weekend:
Thurs: HOT. Mudder stayed with us that day. That morning we had vegan cupcakes from whole foods for my 36th b-day. We gave sierra bunch of small pieces and she had fun tossing them on the floor while diabetic Lemma ate them off the floor. Set up some strollers I was considering (I am having way too much trouble and spending way too much time deciding on a stroller for SHE.) Josh installed the new britax advocate CS carseat (the top of the line car seat with "true side impact protection", a big bulky thing. Later Mudder ran errands (she exhausted herself - she already had a really bad cold sore, so bad it hurt when she talked, and then she got a sore throat later that weekend). We stayed upstairs in Sierra's room with the room AC.
Fri: Santa Cruz - it was cooler today, and definitely in santa cruz. We went to new brighton state beach and set up our tent. it was chilly and the fog was starting to roll in when we arrived. lots of people were leaving (and most people were gone by the time we left). In the tent it was cozy though, and sierra had lots of fun crawling around in it. I peeked out and saw tons of seagulls and pelicans diving into the water - must have been lots of fish out there. I then saw a porpoise diving in and out for fish! It was pretty cool. Josh saw it too.
We had lunch at the cambodian restaurant off Hwy 17 and sierra sat in her healthy care booster chair, which she really seems to enjoy. she had lunch and then sat there chewing on her sippy cup top, which she is always grabbing for these days.
Sat: Baby land to look at strollers and buy top-of-stairs gate, then walked around Willow Glen while sierra napped. dinner at acqui.
sun: home and josh installed top-of-stairs gate and then the failed gate installation around bed.
mon: gilroy gardens. sierra enjoyed the merry go round. she stared with wide eyes. she is a quiet observer rather than a loud mouth, mudder has observed. when she sees new and interesting things, she quietly looks with wide eyes. she also got to go on a train. the only thing is it was HOT - 90F - we should have checked the temp before leaving! even though she had sunblock on, and i was as usual super paranoid careful about making sure she was shaded all the time, she got her first sunburn in the inside of her elbows and a bit on the backs of her knees. :( I felt awful afterwards. still do.

Sierra now claps her hands whenever we sing "if you're happy and you know it" adorable. she loves clapping. her clapping even makes noise now. (before it was more just putting her hands together) :)
***
Sierra also now likes sticking her arm out in the air. josh calls it her statue of liberty pose.
***
Sierra has for at least a month or two now really loved playing peek a boo, with her being the one playing peek a boo! You just give her a sheet and she holds it with both hands and lifts her arms so her face is covered (sometimes it's not so covered, depending on where she happens to have grabbed the sheet, but no matter) and then lowers her arms and laughs, and then repeats... she especially likes doing this in her carseat.
