Not as much a blog as an online baby book for jotting down notes, milestones, and documenting all the wonderful stories of Sierra before we forget them! - for her to enjoy when she grows up and for us to look back on the memories in the future. Note that this blog is not publicly searchable, so please do not share the link. I may end up password protecting it at some point.

The pleasure is truly on our side. Sophia was so excited and we had such a good time. We all love Sierra and you and Josh are wonderful hosts.
Yesterday after dinner, Sophia (in her own way) kept asking if we are going to your house again ;) She couldn't wait to play with Sierra again.
We look forward to having Sierra and some or all of you coming over to our house!

MILESTONE - 13 HOURS!
Last night, Sierra slept from 5pm to 6am (with just one "daddy back" around 8pm and a couple of "daddy backs" from 4:30-6am.
13 hours!!!!!!!
Sierra has never slept more than 10 or maybe 11 hours ever since birth, and even then, those nights were few. Probably a few more of those when she was around 6-8 months or so.
This is standard stuff for other babies, but not Sierra.
We were all nervous and hyper last night because we were worried she would wake up at 2am.
I can't believe that other parents get this much downtime EVERYDAY!
Background:
She fell asleep on the drive home from her playdate with Skyla and Caitlin. She was alone in the backseat since Gran gran took her by herself. This may have helped. However, she slept from 12-12:45, which meant she was TIRED by 5pm (she usually naps from 1 or 2pm to 3pm) and asking for "mommy nai nai" (i.e. I'M TIRED!) so she I nursed her to sleep for her nap (as usual). She woke up at 6pm cranky and I nursed the other side (though there's no milk left on that side, I think) and she was still cranky, so I held her and she fell back asleep. I put her down and I guess after that her body thought it was night time.
I have weaned her from her bedtime nursing and her dawn nursing at this point. Only her afternoon nap nursing is left. Apparently typically the last to go is the bedtime nursing, but whatever.

Chinese!
I can't believe I forgot to post this.
A few weeks ago, she was trying to slide closed the kitchen door and saying "guan da lai" and I said "what?" and she repeated herself and I said "what?" and she finally said "Chinese!" Liling heard this and laughed her head off. And that's when I realized she was saying close the door in Chinese! (Which I think is actually "guan qi lai" or something like that)

SHE enjoys...
Current things she enjoys:
DK Tractor book (from the library)
"Tractor book" she says when she wants to read this book (which is often). She loves pointing out the colors of all the tractors and (of course) the wheels. She also keeps reminding us that she wants to ride a tractor by pointing at the driver and saying "Ra ra" again and again and again... We'll have to find a place for her to ride a tractor!
Nian nian (sticker) book:
Riding the glass elevator at Whole Foods
Animal crackers
Necklaces - Gran brought over some of Daisy's old shell necklaces from her hula days. She loves wearing them and says "shells ge ge" asking you to sing pearly shells, a song gran gran introduced to her and josh has never heard of.
Pictures/video
Posing for pictures/video (she gets this concept now and will pose for just a brief second before rushing over to you to look at the picture.)
Especially loves looking at the "merry go round" video of her on the Vasona Park carousel

Singing
She sings Twinkle little star, ABC, and Wheels on the bus to herself. Last night, I got to witness her singing all three while she was rolling around trying to fall asleep. She sang a fragment of ABC (I believe it was H-Z) and then "gran gran on the bus ni you... all through the town" and then "ayi on the bus bunnyuhnee... all through the town"
We sing gran gran on the bus says "ni you" and Ayi on the bus says "shou bu liao ni!" (Both of which roughly mean "What are we going to do with you?!", a playful phrase in Chinese)

Hot and cold
This morning, I washed Sierra's hands before breakfast in cold water since it's warm and will be hot today. She said "cold!" and shivered and said "oooo" like she does when we look at the "cold" flashcard with the penguin.
When food is hot, she goes "hot" and blows it "foo, foo, foo".

Diaper wai wai de
At least a month ago, Ra ra observed Mudder straightening one of the walkway lights that was crooked. My mom pointed out that it was "wai wai de" (crooked). Ever since, Sierra has been pointing at all the crooked lights in the neighborhood and pointing out "wai wai de" and insisting that we straighten them.
Yesterday for the 2nd time, Sierra was running down the hallway and then said "wai wai de. Diaper wai wai de." Her diaper was falling off! Amazing application of concepts!
--------
She also loves watching me stand while leaning my upper body over and saying "mommy wai wai de". She copies me and does it too. :)

Where's Dolly?
Sierra knows where stuff is better than we do.
A couple weeks ago, I was looking for her star blanket (which she likes to nap with) before her nap. I said "Where's the star blanket?" and Sierra said "Lego". I didn't understand and repeated "Where's the star blanket?" at least once. Sierra finally stood up, walked across the hall to the Lego blocks with me following her, and the star blanket was right next to the Lego on the jungle playmat!
Tonight, she said "Dolly back!" (More on this below). And I said "Where's dolly?" and started looking around by her bookcase. She said "crayon". And I was like "Oh yeah! Dolly is sitting on her drawing table!" I went out into the hallway and got Dolly.
Josh taught her this thing where she will say "___ back" when she is falling asleep and you put that thing on her back. It started with "Daddy back" or "mommy back" or "gran gran back", but one night when I was putting her to sleep, she started naming stuffed animals. :)
Lately she has taken interest in the East Asian doll that Grandma had given her last August. Like tonight she took off her clothes and I asked if I could put pajamas on her and she said "yes" and "pajamas". She then looked at her and said her body parts -- toufa (hair), yanjing (eyes), bizi (nose), mouth (in English). :)

Plural and counting
For at least 1-2 months, Sierra has been counting in English up to 10, with a little help (I say 1, she says 2, I say 3, she says 4 - her 22 month old playdate Sklya did this too, so maybe that's how toddlers like to count!). She also counts small numbers of items in her books when you say "can you count how many ___ there are?" Lately, she has been counting in Chinese. I think her counting in Chinese may be better than her English counting.
Recently, I noticed Sierra has been using plurals. I can't remember which words, but will provide examples when I do.
Also, I noticed she will add an "s" for present tense:
Sierra will tell us to gugu (hide) and seek. She says "Mommy gugus" and insists that you hide or she keeps repeating "Mommy gugus". She used to say "gugu" (no s).

Sierra slightly under the weather
Sierra had the MMR and Pc vaccines on the same day 2 weeks ago. Sierra is off cycle with her vaccines (ahead on some - Polio and DtaP (due to the recent outbreak of whooping cough)) and behind on others, which is fine. They don't usually give these 2 simultaneously, but the dr. said it was fine. I think it's a better idea to separate them so your body only processes it one at a time, but Josh argued convenience and not having to go back for a nurse visit for the shot. MMR is a live vaccine so it is harder to process - more side effects. The weird thing is the side effects typically occur 7-10 days and up to 14 days later. Well on Tuesday, Sierra started having a rash with small bumps, more noticeable after the bath (which is how it works - more noticeable when warm). Wed, her voice we hoarse. Both have gotten a little better. But then there are the big creamy poos that started a week ago. Sierra normally goes every other day and it's never this creamy and frequent. She's gone 1-2x per day, even on a starchy diet (which normally would totally plug her up) ever since a week ago. The nurse thinks that is probably viral and unrelated, as is the hoarseness, and it should go away. Amazingly stomach viruses last up to 14 days in babies (weaker immune systems than adults).
I think we should have separated out the shots by a month or so so her body isn't fighting multiple things at the same time. Especially since we knew MMR has greater sensitivity, espeically the first time (non-booster). Lesson learned.

Sierra's new skills
Yesterday, she opened the front door.
She also did a forward somersault for the first time. The night before, while we tried to get her to sleep, she was bending over and putting her head on her bed (the start of a somersault) and rolling sideways - she kept saying "upside down" with her Sierra accent. I *think* she was imitating a parenting magazine Swiffer ad that she has seen many times in which a baby in a diaper is posing in that position, looking through his legs at the camera. I had told her (months ago) that that baby is upside down and would show her what the baby is doing and she would try to imitate. Well she finally got it! And the somersault!

SHE's popping
We love this picture. :)
We stopped by at my work and walked around the neighborhood. She really enjoyed these poppies. I told her they were poppies and she kept saying "poppy". She picked one and held it in her hand the rest of the walk and into the car (where she promptly lost the top - plucked off the flower? - and we did some searching for the poppy in the car before we drove by and I ran out and picked another one for the ride home). Sierra will hold things like flowers with her long after you even notice that she started holding them. It's funny.

Watering can and household helper
I can't remember if I mentioned this before, but Sierra looooooooves using the "wah-ging-can". She goes around the yard watering plants with it (with assistance). Gran gran got her a small toy watering can. She also has one that came in her sand toys bag that she plays with in the bathtub. She actually doesn't really play with it in the bathtub, but she talks about it and makes sure you remember to bring it to the tub for bathtime. She talks about it when you talk about taking a bath.
Speaking of bathtime, Sierra is the happiest little helper. When you announce bath time, she immediately gets up and you hand her her box of bath toys from the hall bathroom and she carries them to the tub in the master bath. Then you go back to her clean clothes from her closet and tell her to bring her clothes and diaper to the bathroom, and she runs down the hall bringing her clothes and diaper to the bathroo.
She is also insistent of helping with the laundry. She can say laundry, washer, and dryer. She helps load the dryer (you hand her a sock, she throws in the sock, picking it up if it drops). She wants to help load the washer with dirty clothes, but I am not sure how/if I want her doing that. On both the washer and dryer, she waits for you to pick her up to push the Start button.
She has been doing all of the above (watering can, bath time help, laundry help), for months now. I just wanted to make sure it was noted. I think the bath time help started first. She very early on would toddle her bath stuff down the hall. It was incredible at first. Now it's is her routine and absolutely adorable!

Super Taster
Josh and I are both foodies and picky eaters. Unfortunately, Sierra came of (solids-eating) age during the fall/winter, when the most un-delicious fruits are in season other than imported fruit. Therefore, Sierra only likes: apples, pears, bananas, watermelon, and grapes (from Chile). Sierra only got to try summer fruits a little bit late last summer as they were fading out. She did like plums and would bite off my plum that I shared with her, but then summer ended. Over the past few weeks, summer fruit season has come to the bay area. I've tried giving her: blueberries, cantaloupe, cherries, nectarines, strawberries, and peaches. She didn't gag on them (good), but she also pretty much spat them all out. Sierra is at the age where she only likes familiar foods and it's summer fruit time. :( The funny thing is, she knows all these fruits and can say them all, so she was enthused to try them when I told them what they were, but she promptly spit them all out.
Like day before yesterday, I gave her some super sweet and ripe donut peach cubes. She tried them and spat them out (no surprise). Then today, I tried something different. I grated in some donut peach into her grated apples. It was about 50/50. I told Liling not to tell her there was p-e-a-c-h in there. Ra ra took one bite and said "peach". I said "apple!" She took another bite - "peach". I said "apple!" I thought she would give up. But... she kept eating and finished the whole thing! Maybe she's coming around after all.

Ra-ra na
Sierra likes to do things herself. She often says in Chinese "Ra-ra na!" (Ra ra does it!), especially when I am trying to put something in her mouth either with a spoon or my fingers. She wants to take it and put it in her mouth by herself.
"Chuh-nese"
I think things are getting confusing enough that I decided to explain to her the other day that everything can be said in English or in Chinese. I told her that Ayi speaks Chinese and mommy speaks English. I gave her some examples, such as: "In Chinese, you say deng deng. In English you say light." (words she already knows that there are two words for). She thoughtfully repeated "Chuh-nese" back to me. Then she went through a list of people she knows:
SHE: Gran gran?
Me: Gran gran speaks Chinese.
SHE: Daddy?
Me: Daddy speaks English.
SHE: Mommy?
Me: Mommy speaks English.
SHE: Auntie Day?
Me: Auntie Daisy speaks English.
SHE: Grandma?
Me: Grandma speaks English.
SHE: Grandpa?
Me: Grandpa speaks English.
(By this point I was feeling bad that just about everyone speaks English.)
SHE: Robbie?
Me: Robbie speaks English
SHE: Adam?
Me: Adam speaks English
Yesterday and tonight, we talked about the toy trains she saw this weekend, as she was falling asleep. One of the train tracks/trains was off. The other trains/tracks were on. She said "off" and then "guandiao. Chinese". She repeated this. Josh was laughing in amazement that she seems to be picking up on the difference.

SHE's on a date with Jaden
Today she woke up from her nap, and Josh said "Do you want to go visit Jaden?" And as yesterday with the Toy Train, she said "Hai yao!" and said "Jaden" again and again (not frequently, but every 10 minutes or so just to show me she knew where we were going) until we got to his house in San Mateo.
After enjoying herself with his toys and hanging out with Jaden's family, I mentioned that it was time to go. She immediately said "bye bye" and went to pull the front door knob down. Haha. And she did it again as we kept talking about going home. So we had no problem leaving. She enjoyed the visit, no doubt, so maybe (as with the trains yesterday), she is maturing and knowing how to say goodbye (Josh theorized tonight on the drive home).

SHE saw Toy Train
Today we got a toy train table hand me down. I decided we should go see a toy train. There is one in Los Altos, conveniently. She woke up from her nap and Josh said "Do you want to see the toy train?" and she immediately said "Toy Train!" and for the next 30 min. as we prepped and drove there, she repeated "Toy Train". She knows "toy" and "train" and I think the toy train in one of her books, so maybe she knew, who knows! She was excited.
She watched the toy train interestedly, but when we left and said bye, bye train, she did not fuss. Therefore, she liked them OK, we think.
Later we happened to see a more elaborate toy train display at Valco. It was put on by the model train club. Pretty amaxing setup with multiple trains and tracks. One of the tracks was off. Sierra keeps remembering this. (See above posts.)

Genetics
Today gran gran commented (not for the first time) that Sierra takes after my love of drawing (although she didn't give me crayons until I was a bit older) and Josh's love of music.
Here is a list of traits and in parentheses whom she takes after:
Loves drawing (me, as a kid)
Loves playing in sandboxes (me, as a kid)
Loves music (Josh, Grandma)
Loves dancing (Daisy, Gran gran)
Picky eater (Josh, me - though even I wasn't as picky at this age, according to gran)
Energizer bunny (Josh, Gran gran) - she keeps going and going and going, and won't sit down except for reading, cards, and drawing for brief periods. She's gotten better at sitting still (e.g., for drawing) for longer stretches, but ironically, gran gran pushes her to get up and keep moving since she wants her to get exercise. Go figure.
Loves the color purple (Grandma)
Good at languages (Daisy) - she can roll her Rs and used to (before she could talk much) do this for fun all the time. She just did it tonight again. She rolls her Rs when she says "Ra-Ra" too. Come to think of it, she rolls all her Rs. I thinks she thinks that is how R sounds. Neither Josh nor I nor Gran gran can roll an R. Josh pointed out that maybe we are all born being able to do it, but we lose it if we don't keep using it. We need to teach this girl some Spanish!
Needs little sleep, poor sleeper (Josh)
Loves shopping (Grandma) - try getting her out of the Hallmark store or the gift shop! Woo what a fuss!
Drama queen (Daisy) - If she doesn't get her way (like if she's asking for a magazine), be prepared for drama! She was also able to cry big tears from birth. Most babies take awhile before they can tear. Sierra had the loudest cry in the newborn nursery. Gran could hear her through the window. We could hear her being wheeled down the hall towards our room. Daisy also has a very loud voice.
Favorite color is purple (Grandma)
Fearless (Josh) - loves going down the big kid slides.
Extremely sensitive hearing and observation skills (Josh) - Sierra wakes up to the slightest volume. We are always as QUIET as possible when she is napping and after she goes to bed. Often when I sneak into her room at night to adjust the window, she stirs because she hears my footsteps!
Reading deserves its own section:

Loves reading while eating (Josh, me)
